In one case, the jury awarded $14.5 million to the widow of a man who died from mesothelioma at the age of 54. In the second case, the jury awarded $3.5 million to the representative of a man who died from mesothelioma at the age of 62. In the third case, the jury awarded $12 million to the representative of a man who died from mesothelioma at the age of 64.
While all these men died from the same cause- the asbestos cancer mesothelioma, their exposure to asbestos took place in different work settings. In the first case, the deceased was exposed to lethal asbestos fibers while working with welding rods. In the second case, the deceased was exposed to asbestos fibers while working with gaskets. He may also have been exposed to asbestos while serving in the Navy, working in the Pittsburgh plant and working as an electrician.
Sadly, many types of retired workers may have been exposed to deadly asbestos fibers at various work settings. Mechanics, electricians, boilermakers and sheet metal workers are just some of the workers who have been exposed to asbestos and are at risk of developing asbestos cancers such as mesothelioma and lung cancer. The reason that so many types of former workers are at risk of developing mesothelioma is because asbestos was used in a wide range of products.
Many roofing shingles, brake pads, floor tiles and insulation materials were made with asbestos because asbestos is cheaply available and is fire-resistant. Even though many companies knew that asbestos can cause cancer, they chose to conceal the dangers of asbestos to take advantage of the commercial benefits of asbestos. Thus, workers who worked with asbestos products were neither warned of the dangers of asbestos nor were they provided masks to prevent asbestos exposure. As a result, thousands of former workers are being diagnosed with and dying from mesothelioma every year.
